Golubinjak

Enjoy Golubinjak Park

A visit to Park Golubinjak is a wonderful way to experience the natural beauty of Gorski Kotar while staying at our cottage in Crni Lug. This protected forest park near Lokve spreads across 51 hectares of lush woodland, towering trees, and dramatic karst formations — including scenic rock openings, the intriguing Golubinja semi-cave and the Ledena (Ice) Cave. The park features easy walking trails such as the “Cave Trail” and paths to viewpoints, making it perfect for families, hikers, and nature lovers alike.

Risnjak Peak

Hike to Risnjak Peak

The hike to Risnjak, the highest peak of the Risnjak National Park, is one of the most iconic mountain routes in Gorski kotar. The trail leads through dense alpine forests, karst landscapes, and open high-mountain meadows before climbing to the exposed summit ridge. Reaching the peak rewards hikers with breathtaking views over Gorski kotar, the Kvarner coast, and deep inland toward continental Croatia. The entry tickets for the Park can be purchased at the entrance in Crni Lug or online.

Kamacnik

Visit Kamacnik Canyon

Just a short drive from your cottage, this picturesque karst canyon carved by the clear waters of the Kamacnik river offers a scenic and accessible hike along a well-marked trail. The trail stretches around 3 km to the emerald-green source of the river — one of the deepest springs in Europe — and rewards walkers with peaceful rapids, small waterfalls, and plenty of photo opportunities amidst untouched nature. Entrance to the canyon trail is available for a small fee and tickets are purchased on-site at the entrance kiosk near the trailhead.

Snjeznik hike

Hike to Snjeznik Peak

Hiking to Snježnik offers a rewarding blend of pristine mountain scenery, peaceful forest paths, and panoramic views stretching across the Croatian highlands. The trail is moderately challenging, leading from the popular Platak area through rich beech and fir woods before opening onto rocky ridges near the summit. At the top, sweeping vistas toward Risnjak, the Kvarner Bay, and surrounding peaks open to hikers. It’s an ideal route for nature lovers seeking a refreshing escape into one of Croatia’s most beautiful mountain regions.

Lokve lake

Enjoy Lokve Lake

Lokve lake is a reservoir up to 40 metres deep in places. It stretches up to the foot of Risnjak, creating a unique visual postcard. It was constructed in 1954 when a dam was built to stop the flow of the river Lokvarka. Lake Lokve is a traditional gathering place for hikers and ramblers, as well as cyclists. In addition to walks along the lake, it is also great for swimming in the summer, or fishing throughout the year. Some of the world’s largest trout were caught here!

Located about 40 minutes from Crni Lug, Platak is known for its relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere and gentle to intermediate slopes suitable for beginners and recreational skiers. The resort features several ski lifts, a snow park, and sledding areas. In the cozy mountain huts you can warm up with local food and hot drinks. Because of its elevation and coastal influence, Platak often enjoys good snow conditions throughout the season.

Gorski kotar sledding

Sledding

For a truly joyful winter adventure, sledding in Gorski Kotar is a must-do activity for families, and anyone who loves snowy fun. Thanks to the region’s reliable winter conditions and gentle rolling hills, you’ll find several great spots for sledding. There are meadows around Crni Lug and well-maintained slopes in Delnice, Begovo Razdolje, and on Platak. These areas offer safe, accessible terrain perfect for children and beginners, while still providing enough slope for plenty of speed and excitement.

River fishing

Sweetwater fishing

The region is rich in crystal-clear rivers, streams, and mountain lakes teeming with trout and other freshwater species. Popular fishing spots are the Lokve Lake and Kupa River. Both offer beautiful surroundings and a calm atmosphere perfect for both beginners and experienced anglers. The pristine waters and forested landscape create an unforgettable setting. You can purchase fishing permits from local tourist offices and fishing associations.

Lokvarka cave

Visit Lokvarka Cave

One of the most memorable local experiences near Crni Lug is a visit to Lokvarka Cave, one of Croatia’s deepest and most spectacular show caves. Discovered in 1911, this fascinating underground world extends over six levels, with the first four open to visitors. It showcases dramatic stalactites, stalagmites and unique karst formations deep beneath the earth’s surface. Guided tours are offered on selected days (typically weekends and by prior arrangement on weekdays), with several entry times during the day .

Culture, Castles & Museums

Beyond its natural beauty, Gorski Kotar offers a rich cultural layer shaped by centuries of history and tradition. Scattered throughout the region are castles, small museums and interpretation centres that bring local stories to life—from traditional rural life and craftsmanship to the fascinating wildlife of the surrounding forests.
